Mixing Google Maps & Flickr: 828 photos geotagged and counting.
San Francisco you people rock. Chicago you lot rule too! Everyone else in the USA yeah, love you too! Oh and us lot :) :: Warning may kill your broswer, good luck!
You can join in and add your own photos by following a couple of simple steps.
- Add three tags to your photo, "geo:lat=xx.xxxx", "geo:lon=xx.xxxx" and "geotagged", where xx.xxxx are the decimal format for it's lat and long position.
Example "geo:lat=53.013", "geo:lon=-2.1756" & "geotagged"
- Then;
- Fastest, in the description add a link to www.geobloggers.com (i.e. (<a href="http://www.geobloggers.com">geotagged</a>). From the photos own page (not the photo stream) click the link. geobloggers will automagically look up the photo you just came from and search the tags for the lat and long. Note: If the link doesn't seem to work wait a couple of minutes and try again. Sometimes it takes a short while for the lon/lat tags to appear in the XML data I get back from the flickr API.
- Slower, just wait. geobloggers picks up the RSS stream for all public photos tagged as "geotagged". It does this once every 5 mins, but the RSS feed itself is updated far less often (as far as I can tell). As it only holds the last 10 pictures, it's possible it'll miss some this way, I'll wrangle around this in the future.
- errr...
- that's it.
or
- If your camera records the GPS data in the Exif headers, tag your photo with "geocoded" and it'll be grabbed from the RSS feed

I'm just adding some cleaner formatting to the homepage and splitting out instructions to other pages in the site.
Then I'm going to work out a better way of viewing and finding photos by photographer, as well as figuring out a
method of setting the initial zoom level when you view a photo.
After that I'll be looking at ways to divide photos up into groups and sets. If you do several walks you may want to group them
together to be selectable and viewable on the map in job lots.
To Do List
-
Add Filtering By User.
-
Add an RSS feed of photos around a lat/lon point, i.e. ?lat=53&lon=-3&range=1.0 So an RSS reader can find out when photos have been added near you.
And it'll include enough data that people can use the info in other projects.
-
Add Groups.
-
Zip, Postcode lat/long lookup for USA/UK (hopefully).
-
Figure out the initial zoom level for the map.
-
As more photos get added there will come a point where some will just never show up, i.e. 50 photos all taken in the same location, only the first 26 will show up. When that starts
to become an issue I'll add paging (next/prev) and filtering onto it, so you can filter out by date taken range and/or user.

I'm going to pull in del.icio.us feeds for geotagged too, and see if I can pull lat/lon tags from entries tagged with "geotagged", that way you can geotag a web page and
have it appear on the same map as photos. So using flickr and del.icio.us you can mix and match web and photos :)
